General information
- Credits
- 4 ECTS
Objective
The aim of the course is to provide a sound understanding of sustainable water resources issues. After the course the student understands the principles of water resource engineering including surface and groundwater resources. The student knows the topics of the course; hydrologic cycle and its components, distribution of the earth's water resources, distribution of fresh water on the earth, rainfall distribution, river basins. The student knows the problems of low flows, flooding and their mitigation using reservoirs; uncertainties in water resources management.
Content
Surface and groundwater resources, concepts for planning water resources, hydrologic cycle, irrigation, water systems, dams, management of water resources, drought and flood management. Knowledge on water retention and flow in soils, contamination of surface water, hydropower and dams.
Qualifications
Water Treatment Technology
Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)
1. Evaluation criteria for content; Concepts of planning water resources. The student shall be able to recognize, define and describe central elements of planning criteria and pictured technologies.
2. Evaluation criteria for content; Hydrologic cycle, irrigation, water systems, dams, management of water resources, drought and flood management. The student shall show that he/she can come up with logical categorizations and relevant problem solutions. The student shall be able to name, list and relate to central parts of the hydrologic cycle and suitable methods for drought and flood management.
3. Evaluation criteria for content; water retention and flow in soils, contamination of surface water, hydropower. The student shall be able to label, repeat and match central elements of hydropower, contamination of surface water and suitable pats of water retention and flow in soils.
