Objective

After completion of this course the student recognizes the adapted biological, chemical and mechanical treatment processes. The student knows the substantial equipment and their optimum application areas. The student understands the most common water treatment processes and is able to solve the calculation related to them. After completion of this course the student is able to select the most efficient purification water treatment process. The student knows the basic calculations and reactions in connection to water.

Content

1. Biological as well as chemical and mechanical methods in water and waste water treatment. Suspended solids separation from water and waste water. Most common chemical purification methods in municipal and industrial applications. Activated sludge process as part of wastewater treatment. Flocculation, precipitation and flotation. Filtration, adsorption and ion exchange technology as part of water treatment.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

1. Evaluation criteria for content; Water and wastewater treatment technology selections.
The student shall be able to recognize, define and describe central elements of selection criteria and pictured technologies.

2. Evaluation criteria for content Separation technics, chemical and mechanical treatments for the most common water and wastewater technology.
The student shall show that he/she can come up with logical categorizations and relevant problem solutions. The student shall be able to name, list and relate to central elements of separation technics, chemical and/or mechanical treatment method.

3. Evaluation criteria for content Activated sludge process, ion exchange and membrane separation technology.
The student shall be able to label, repeat and match central elements of activated sludge, ion exchange and membrane technology as solutions in water and wastewater treatment operations.
