Objective
A student acquires the understanding of statistical phenomena. (S)he also learns to handle and analyze data and master related more advanced mathematics. A student with a successful completion of the course obtains knowledge that may help her/him to apply for master programs.
On completion of this course the student:
• understands the significance of statistical phenomena in natural sciences and technology
• has the big picture of the most important mathematics and mathematical methods related to probability, statistics and data analysis
• understands the basic phenomena of solid-state physics and their impact and the effect of entropy in physical phenomena and procedures applying statistical theories
• is able to analyze and solve essential physical problems
• masters the software used in the course
• understands the contents of related scientific and technical articles
Content
• Probability and statistical mathematics
• Statistical physics, especially thermodynamics and entropy and its impact on solid-state physics
Qualifications
A student who masters the basics of classical physics (mechanics, electricity and wave motion) and has good mathematical basic skills (basic differentiation and integration), benefits most of this course.
Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)
The student:
• understands the basic phenomena of statistical physics and thermodynamics
• is able to solve basic mathematical problems of the course
• can explain and present mathematical solutions of physical problems practiced in the course
Assessment criteria, good (3)
In addition to satisfactory criteria, the student:
• understands the impact of statistical physics in solid-state physics and is able to analyze the relationship between the laws of statistical physics and the mathematical methods related to the applications
• is able to apply learned mathematical methods
Assessment criteria, excellent (5)
In addition to the good criteria, the student:
• has an excellent understanding of the studied physical phenomena and their applications
