Objective

The student knows how to isolate, purify and characterize nucleic acids from different materials. S/He understands the basics of DNA cloning and can describe PCR, qPCR and sequencing techniques. The student knows how to make gene editing and understands the steps of recombinant protein preparation.
S/he understands the significance of DNA techniques in various applications, like GMO analyses, food fraud detection, hygiene analyzes of production processes and indoor air quality monitoring. The student is familiar with the Finnish law and regulations and has considered ethical issues regarding gene technology.
The student knows the main molecular biological research methods and is able to apply some of them in practice.

Content

Cloning methods and vector structures in DNA technology. DNA amplification-, hybridization- and sequencing methods as well as RNAi mechanisms and CRISPR/Cas techniques. Gene technology ethics, Finnish legislation and risk analyses.
