Descriptions
The Music degree programme has two bachelor degrees: Music Educator and Musician. In the Music Educator's Degree there are three professional majors: Instrument and Vocal Teaching in Classical Music or Pop and Jazz Music, and Early Childhood Music Education and Cultural Wellbeing. In the Musician's Degree there are two professional majors: Music Performance, and Music Writing and Production. Candidates apply directly to professional majors through entrance examinations.
Music pedagogy studies lead to a vocational teaching qualification. The core of teacher education is the application of artistic and pedagogical skills to support human well-being and build a sustainable future. Graduates with a major in Instrument and Vocal Teaching are qualified to work at various levels of education in the field of music, such as individual and group instrument instruction and leading ensembles and bands. Graduates with a major in Early Childhood Music Education and Cultural Wellbeing will have a broad range of skills to support learning, inclusion and well-being and will be qualified to teach elementary music for all age groups. Graduates of the major can work, for example, as teachers in music schools or in communities, as professionals and developers of creative activities promoting well-being in social and health services, and as implementers of music activities in the field of associations.
The music pedagogy degree includes 60 credits of pedagogical studies leading to a vocational teaching qualification, which is why the music pedagogy degree does not include 15 or 30 credits of optional studies.
Instrumentalists and singers graduating with a major in Music Performance are performing musicians, working as performers in diverse professions in the rhythm music field, such as orchestral, band, and studio musicians. Graduates of the Music Writing and Production major are proficient in composing, arranging, songwriting and music technology and work in fields such as music and multimedia content producers, sound designers or music production planners and producers.
The music degree programme is based on individual study plans, which are based on the curricula of the professional majors. Students' own individual pathways are realised through optional project studies, work placements, profile studies in working life skills and elective studies. Teaching is planned and implemented in close cooperation with the working-life. Research, development and innovation skills will be supported through work-life projects, concert activities and work and teaching placements.
Internationality and multiculturalism are a key part of the studies. Internationalisation is achieved through home internationalisation (guest lectures and masterclasses), short exchanges and longer student exchange periods. The programme has a wide network of international partners and our experts are active in international organisations in the field of music.
Due to the individual nature of artistic studies, courses in the Music Degree Programme are mainly assessed on a pass/fail basis.
Development
The development of the curricula of the Music Degree Programme is based on the international descriptions of competences and skills published by the European Association of Conservatoires (AEC) and defined by the Erasmus/Polifonia network, the recommendations of the Rectors' Conference of Finnish Universities of Applied Sciences Arene ry and guidelines for music education from Metropolia UAS.
In addition to the pedagogical staff, representatives of students and working life in the field, as well as a professional advisory council, have participated in the development of the curriculum. There is an ongoing, defined and described process for the development of the curriculum.

Objective
Upon graduation as Music Educator, students will have a broad range of musical and pedagogical skills and will be experts in pedagogical interaction. The student will have a broad understanding of the potential of music education and cultural well-being and will be able to justify it to learners, communities and society. The student gains competence in reflecting on their own activities, team work, and interacting professionally in working communities.
A strong musician's competence as a Music Educator builds on artistic and technical mastery of one's own instrument. Music Educators are able to support learning through a variety of approaches and to exploit the potential of applied arts depending on their professional major.
Graduating Musicians will have a broad command of the different genres of rhythm music and the expression they require. Depending on the major, the core competences are either advanced instrumental and ensemble skills or music creation, production and technology. The studies support the student's professional growth through a wide range of studies that develop musical perception and working life skills. Students will recognise the impact and potential of global developments and phenomena in their field.
Students graduating from the Music Degree Programme will be able to seek and organise information critically, to analyse and reflect on their own and others' work and to express themselves both verbally and in writing. They can produce and interpret musical notation and other graphic and written expressions of music. Students understand the developmental trends in music and can put their own activities into a historical perspective. They will be able to apply an entrepreneurial attitude to their working life, understand the music industry, copyright legislation and practices, and the contractual and reporting procedures in the music industry.
Upon graduation, students will be able to work in multicultural and international networks and environments. They will understand the importance of social sustainability and will be able to promote it by developing their cooperation and interaction skills and future literacy. In the working and learning environment, students will be able to promote equality, justice, equity and well-being.
