Descriptions

The curriculum of the Degree Program in Design is a knowledge-based. It is divided into the studies of the University of Applied Sciences, core requirement studies of the degree program and professional studies. The professional studies include courses in e.g. interior architecture, textile design and industrial design. The professional orientation is selected at the application stage. The professional studies also entail collaboration projects with business and industry. In addition, the studies consist of a work placement, elective studies and finally the Bachelor’s thesis.
The curriculum has been developed in co-operation with partners in business and industry and the students to meet the future requirements in the field of design and to incorporate comprehensive design thinking and its use in multi-disciplinary collaboration. The curriculum is based on the following aspects: mastering design, production, design process, visual arts as well as developing skills in service design and building one´s professional identity.

Development

Developing the curriculum and work life co-operation
The curriculum of Design was developed between 2013-2014 and the new curriculum was adopted in the fall 2014. All staff members in industrial design according to their areas of expertise, work life representatives, alumni, and the students took part in the development process. The aim of the curriculum entailed work life correspondence as well as supporting design thinking in the curriculum. The Professional Advisory Board was requested for feedback concerning the new curriculum.

Description

The studies in industrial design focus on professionally crucial contents with respect to information and skills, such as analytically observing the environment, communication skills in design, three dimensional giving form, user-centered problem solving, concept design, service design, material and manufacturing technology, and product development. When designing, the following aspects merge: being user-centered, the point of view of production and business. The studies include creating user-centered concepts out of products and services, visualizing, 3D rendering, building models, using materials and user innovations for creating products, multi-disciplinary product development projects and internships.
