Descriptions

The degree programme in Energy and Environmental Technology is designed to provide students with a strong preparation for working in the field of energy and environmental engineering, taking into account today's challenges such as climate change, sustainable development and the circular economy. The engineer graduating from the degree programme will be placed in a wide range of jobs, including design, commissioning and management positions in a variety of companies in the field.

In addition to strong technical skills, energy and environmental engineers are expected to have excellent interpersonal, teamwork and communication skills. Teaching emphasises the application of theory to practice, learning by doing and problem solving through projects. Teaching projects are carried out in Metropolia's Innovation Hubs and in companies in the field.

The degree programme has two main subjects: Energy Production Technologies and Environmental Engineering.

The Energy Production Technologies major focuses on energy technology, particularly from the perspective of energy production. The major deals with processes and their control in power plants and the design of equipment. Environmental engineering is an integral part of this major as it has a significant impact on the operation of power plants, taking into account modern environmental standards. Engineers in this field can also work on energy storage solutions, a key element in the use of renewable energy.

The Environmental Engineering major provides in-depth knowledge of environmental engineering and management. Engineers graduating from the major will be able to manage environmental issues in companies and communities on a broad scale and to work in a project environment. Special emphasis is placed on water supply systems and resource efficiency, which are essential for sustainable development and the circular economy.

Engineers working in a project environment can be part of multidisciplinary teams combining technical expertise, environmental considerations and sustainable development principles. They can participate in research and development projects aimed at new innovations and better climate and environmental protection.

Objective

A graduate in Energy and Environmental Engineering will be able to work in a variety of engineering roles and will have good subject knowledge in their field. He/she is interested in developing in his/her field and is able to learn independently. Energy and environmental engineers have good interpersonal skills and can work as part of a team and on projects. They are able to take responsibility for the work they do.

The competence objectives for the main subjects of the degree, energy production methods and environmental engineering, are described in the descriptions of the main subjects.

Description

The major subject in environmental engineering provides knowledge of quality- and environmental management systems including the principles of management requirements, auditing and continual improvement. The studies focus on water resource technologies and resource efficiency.
