The curriculum takes into account the competence needs of culturally and linguistically diverse students and emphasises language awareness, Finnish language learning and cultural sensitivity in addition to learning the nursing profession.
The curriculum strengthens the learner-centred nature of UAS education by including elective and flexible study options. It enables quick adaptation to the changing skills needs of working life and strengthens ecosystem-based learning in national and international networks.
The studies consist of the common studies of Metropolia, the common studies of the health and social services sector and the nursing degree's own studies. There are 15 credits of optional or elective studies. The curriculum is designed so that students have the opportunity to study an average of 30 credits per semester. The main language of instruction is English for the initial period of study. Finnish language is also integrated in courses. The proportion of Finnish as the language of instruction increases as the studies progress and becomes more intensive towards the end of the studies. Finnish language teaching is integrated into different courses of study and Finnish is also offered as separate courses. Students' language skills are assessed during their studies and a personal study plan in Finnish is designed for them. Finnish language learning and skills are emphasised so that the student has the language skills required for the profession at graduation. If the student has sufficient Finnish language skills, they may choose also elective courses in addition or instead of Finnish language studies.
The learning is based on situations arising from professional practice, for which evidence-based solutions are sought. Teaching will be carried out using functional methods, taking into account the principles of functional language learning. A wide range of pedagogical methods will be used, including the possibilities of digital learning. Knowledge is deepened and extended in different learning environments that support learning, e.g. workshops and simulations. Part of the studies will take place in Metropolia's well-being and health services for clients, which will be produced in a multidisciplinary way in cooperation with teachers and students from different fields. In independent learning environments, students have the opportunity to practice a variety of clinical skills.
Students are responsible for their own learning in both professional and Finnish language skills. During their studies, students' competence is assessed in the following areas: professional knowledge base, professional skills and activities, ethics, cooperation and development, and Finnish language. Students will be equipped for lifelong competence development and further studies.
The curriculum meets the degree requirements, the skills and development needs of working life and the demands of national and international cooperation. It emphasises student-centred and learning and competence-based thinking. The learning outcomes tell students what competences are expected of them and help them to assess their own learning. The competence objectives are defined in cooperation between working life and the UAS, and they describe to working life the student's competence and readiness for different jobs. A competency-based curriculum enables student mobility within and between higher education institutions. It also facilitates the recognition of prior learning (RPL) and the comparison of qualifications obtained in different countries.
Internationalisation is part of your studies and is made possible through international student exchanges, internships or internationalisation-at-home studies, such as joint courses between English and Finnish degree programmes or open international online study environments.
The profile of the Nursing degree at Metropolia is a specialist in multicultural and acute care nursing. The degree will enable you to work as a multicultural and acute care specialist in acute and changing nursing situations with patients/clients of different ages.
The degree is a professionally oriented Bachelor's degree (EQF6). It meets the criteria set by the Finnish national qualifications framework for UAS degrees and the European Qualifications Framework. The programme meets the requirements of the EU Directives (2005/36/EC, 2013/55/EU) on the recognition of professional qualifications.
The degree provides eligibility to apply for a Master level UAS degree programmes or a Master's degree programmes at universities and other higher education institutions.
The qualification offers a wide range of employment opportunities, for example in specialist care, primary healthcare and the private healthcare sector. The nursing degree also enables you to work in a variety of specialist positions, organisations and international assignments.
Development
Curriculum development work for the nursing degree programme is carried out both regionally and nationally.
The competence description of the graduating nurse (key competences, objectives and contents) has been produced in a national cooperation between all universities of applied sciences offering nursing education. The curriculum has been developed in cooperation with working life representatives, the advisory board, teachers and students.
