Descriptions
Polytechnic Master’s degrees are intended for those gainfully employed higher education degree holders who wish to consolidate and extend their competence. Polytechnic Master’s degrees confer the same eligibility for posts and positions as the second-cycle university degrees. Masters degrees conferred by scientific universities and equivalent higher education institutions also offer opportunities for postgraduate studies. Master`s Degree in Rehabilitation is intended for those who have completed a polytechnic Bachelor’s degree in Health Care or Social Services or another appropriate higher education degree and who have no less than three years of work experience in the relevant field. (Act 351/2003, Act 411/2005, Government Decree 352/2003, and Government Decree 423/2005) .
The Finnish degree title is determined according to each student’s prior degree, affixed with the abbreviation YAMK (Finnish equivalent for ‘higher polytechnic degree’). Students at Metropolia University of Applied Sciences may be conferred one of the following degree titles from the Degree Programme in Rehabilitation: apuvälineteknikko (Orthotist-Prosthetist); fysioterapeutti (Physiotherapist); geronomi (Geriatric Nurse); jalkaterapeutti, (Podiatrist); kätilö (Midwife); optometristi, (Optometrist); osteopaatti, (Osteopath); sairaanhoitaja, (Registered Nurse); sosionomi, (Master of Social Services); terveydenhoitaja, (Public Health Nurse); or toimintaterapeutti, (Occupational Therapist). The English-language degree is titled Master of Rehabilitation. The degree is comparable with equivalent international degrees.
Graduates from the Master`s Degree in Rehabilitation are capable of functioning in demanding rehabilitation positions in development and management, which require the ability to anticipate, assess and improve knowledge within the rehabilitation field and reform practices innovatively and internationally.
Development
The parties involved in planning the degree programme and developing the curriculum included a steering group consisted of the following parties: representatives from the world of work; students studying towards the Master’s Degree in Rehabilitation; their workplace contacts; and finally, the teachers of the degree programme. This co-configuration effort proved diverse, as it included a jointly built understanding of the following aspects: mission of education and knowledge; provided skills and competences; feedback surveys and statements on the curricular contents. The competence modules of the programme were confirmed by the national Master’s Degree network in Rehabilitation.
The mission and competence descriptions of the degree programme have been drawn up in a future-oriented manner, based on development programmes and policies for the future concerning the field of Health Care and Social Services. In addition, education was planned with due consideration for national and international quality standards and development policies for education; also the priorities of the Helsinki Metropolitan Area and the strategies of the Metropolia University of Applied Sciences were deliberated.
