Osaamistavoitteet
The course provides fundamental knowledge about media types, formats and compression technologies used in multimedia communications. After completing the course the student is familiar with the technologies and standards related to multimedia and basic multimedia services. The student knows how to acquire speech, audio, digital images and digital video and how they are compressed and multimedia data manipulated using software tools. The student knows how to set up basic multimedia services (e.g. Video streaming) and can estimate the requirements (bitrate, latency etc.) for multimedia networks. The student is able to select proper tools for non-real time and real time media compression and can estimate requirements for networks for multimedia applications.

The student knows principles of multimedia data compression for voice, audio, digital images and video. The student knows the main media formats, compression algorithms and related parameters used in common applications. The student knows how to produce multimedia files for common applications.

The student knows algorithms of multimedia data compression for voice, audio, digital images and video and is able to do calculations and develop algorithms for multimedia. The student knows the main media formats, compression algorithms and related parameters used in common applications and is able to configure software tools and multimedia systems. The student knows how to produce multimedia files for demanding applications. The student understands profiles and levels of media formats, technologies in audio acquisition equipment, still- and video camera technologies, multimedia interfaces and is able to produce media for various applications.
