General information

Credits
3 ECTS

Objective

The student knows the basics of animal cell culture in theory and in practice. The student is familiar with aseptic technique and knows how to work with animal cells. He/she is able to report experiment results.

Content

1. The basics of animal cell culture: subculture and cell lines, principles of cryopreservation, cell banks, quantitation, staining procedures and contaminations (sources, types and monitoring). The most common cell culture applications.
2. Basic cell culture aseptic techniques. Practical training and reporting of the results.

Qualifications

TX00AD19 Biomolecules
TX00AD01 Microbiology I

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

1. The student knows how and why cells are cultured. The student knows what is meant by a cell line.
2. The student is capable of working in a cell culture lab. He/she is able to follow the instructions and culture the cells maintaining sterile techniques. He/she knows how to handle biological waste. The student documents thoroughly cell culturing procedures and steps in an appropriate manner.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

1. The student knows the role and importance of different factors affecting cell culture (materials and methods). He/she is able to explain the difference in between primary cell culture and cell lines.
2. The student is able to culture cells in a responsible manner according to the given instructions and timetable his/her tasks rationally. S/he is able to monitor the cell growth and draw appropriate conclusions of the stages the cells are at and act accordingly.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

1. The student is able to choose correct culturing conditions for a variety of cell lines. He/she understands the basics of the stem cell and iPS –techniques. He/she can name different research applications where cell culturing procedures are appropriate.
2. The student is able to independently ’read’ and interpret cells in culture. He/she is capable of making decisions according her/his observations. He/she is able to develop standard procedures further.
