Expressions and EquationsLaajuus (3 ECTS)

Objective

The student will acquire the basic command of mathematics necessary for the study of engineering. The student will be able to calculate the value of an expression and simplify different expressions. The student will know how to solve the simple equations and systems of equations most common in engineering. The student will understand the difference of manipulating expressions and solving equations, and will be able to give a solution with a reasonable accuracy. The student will be able to plot a graph of a function on a co-ordinate system and be familiar with the basic features of the most common functions. The student will master the trigonometric functions of a right triangle.

Content

Basic arithmetical operations. Calculations with fractions. Manipulation and simplification of expressions with basic operations and letters. Manipulating power-law rate and root expressions. Fractional exponents. Estimation of an expression. Solving polynome equations of the first and second degree. Solving linear systems of equations. Simple power-law, root, exponential and logarithmic equations. Co-ordinate system. Straight line, parabola and other graphs of basic functions. Proportionalities. Trigonometric functions of a right triangle.
