Objective
On completion of the course the student will be familiar with the design of electric motors for major uses in building services engineering. The student will also be familiar with the principles of operation, design and selection of frequency converters as well as the structures of and selection criteria for distribution transformers used in building services engineering.
On completion of the course the student will be able to design an appropriate S1 electric motor and calculate the starting time. The student will also be able to select an appropriate frequency converter. The student will select a transformer for a building.
Content
The structure, operational principles, design and selection of transformers, electric motors, and power electronic devices used in building services engineering systems. The design of feeder and control circuits.
Electrical interference created by power electronic devices and the minimisation of its effects.

The student is able to design and select an appropriate S1 electric motor. The student will also be able to select an appropriate frequency converter according to instructions. The student will be able to select a transformer for a building according to instructions.
