Objective

On completion of the course the student will be able to calculate the need for cooling of a cold storage, and to select a refrigerant. He or she will be able to design a refrigeration system on a diagram level, and to size the devices, pipes and piping equipment of the system. The student is able to use software packages in selecting and sizing devices.

Content

The main components in the need for cooling and calculating power demand. Defining the refrigeration process, selecting a refrigerator, selecting starting values and location for devices. Software packages for defining the refrigeration process and sizing the main devices. Selecting and sizing the compressor, evaporator and condenser and expansion valves. Designing a diagram and piping. Sizing pipes, selecting and sizing other devices and piping equipment (e.g. lubricant, oil separators, condenser pressure control valve, check valves, liquid accumulator, safety valves, filter dryer, sight glass, automatics and controlling , defrosting). Drawing up planning documents.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student is able to perform calculations and create planning documents including the essential phases, but there are significant errors and shortcomings. The student needs to be assisted in various steps.

The student is able to perform calculations and create planning documents including all the essential phases, but there are some errors and shortcomings. The student needs to be assisted in some steps. He or she completes assignments on time.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student is able to perform calculations and create planning documents including all the essential phases, thoroughly and almost without errors. The student needs guidance in the most demanding tasks only. The student is able to give reasons for his or her choices and to provide alternative solutions. The student completes assignments on time.
