According to the Degree Regulations of Helsinki Metropolia University of Applied Sciences students may apply for identification and accreditation of prior learning as part of their compulsory or optional studies, provided they have prior learning corresponding to the curriculum before the course in question begins.

Profile of the programme

The Degree Programme in Media Technology provides full-time Bachelor-level undergraduate studies. Media engineering technologies cover everything from print media via multimedia production to internet technologies and mobile platforms.
The purpose of the training is to produce engineers with good theoretical basic skills required in the field of printing and digital media. Special emphasis is on multichannel publishing, which links the different technologies.
Tuition is in Finnish.

Media engineering core skills are:
• skills in technologies and processes of media, information and publishing systems
• business skills in digital and graphical media
• individual specialization and competence to integrate media skills in wide
• skills in visual communication and content production
In addition to professional learning aims general working life competences are emphasized. That is to develop qualifications to work as a leader or manager, to get general adaptation to working life, to have personal communication skills, life-long-learning and provision of state-of-the-art knowledge.
Such core competences are:
• potential in theory of mathematics and natural science
• potential in acquisition of knowledge, monitoring new information and use it in application
• communication skills and interactivity
• product development and project working skills
• entrepreneur, business and leadership
• internationalization

Occupational profiles of graduates with examples

Typical tasks for an engineer in media are technical design, development, and customer service in the wide field of the information and communication industry. An engineer of the field can be a manager or a specialist in digital publishing, printing, multimedia production, Internet and mobile services or television and video production. Other appropriate tasks are marketing, sales, guidance and training. Also leadership tasks and commercial instruction are realistic possibilities.
The Degree Programme gives potential to develop digital and graphical media concepts, to manage production processes, to work as a specialist and customer service provider as well as to work as an independent entrepreneur of the field.

Examination regulations, assessment and grading

According to the Degree Regulations of Helsinki Metropolia University of Applied Sciences course assessment criteria are specified in the course implementation plan. The teacher in charge of the course will be responsible for the assessment. At the beginning of the course, students must be informed on the assessment principles which must be based on the course objectives. Assessment takes primarily place for each course and applies to the students who have registered and been accepted on the course. If necessary, different components of a course may be assessed individually. If the course consists of several components, the teacher may point this out in the assessment principles contained in the implementation plan.

The assessment scale is as follows: excellent (5), very good (4), good (3), very satisfactory (2), satisfactory (1), fail (0) and pass (P). Any deviations of this scale will be decided by the President.
