Media DesignLaajuus (5 ECTS)

Course unit code: TV00AA43

General information

Credits
5 ECTS

Objective

The student can understand the meaning of the various approaches to product process lifecycle and can choose the most appropriate one for particular product processes. The student is able to justify the decisions made, for both the media elements and for the chosen approach. The student understands the importance of integrating usability and user experience studies along the full product process and knows the meaning of the different usability and user experience methods and their relations to each other. Furthermore, the student is able to design the project process so that the user experience is intertwined with the lean and agile development methods.
-----
The student can analyse the content from the user's perspective and make designing decisions on how to present the content in different terminal equipment taking into account the aspects of usability and user experience. The student can also combine and adapt the different theories. The student is able to adapt the documentation to fit a particular project at hand.

Content

• Pondering on the different terminal equipment and their requirements to presented media for a multichannel publication
• The basic knowledge of scenario-based user centred design is acquired
• The basics of the methods for collecting user data, analysing it and presenting it
• The user interface, interaction and user experience design methods and underlying theories are known and understood
• Methods to activate the user into the design process are understood
• The knowledge on the different methods for evaluating the product’s usability
• How different media can be interpreted and what kind of methods and tools there are to enhance the analysis of the interpretation of the media
-----
• Deeper insight into the definition of media from different perspectives
• Concentration on the methods for presenting the media in an appropriate way from the aspect of the users’ interpretation process
• Knowledge on recent design theories and approaches (e.g. EUD, EUA, UX, Lean & Agile development methods)

Qualifications

The basic common studies of the study program

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

• The student knows and can take into account the different terminal equipment and their requirements in the design process
• The student knows the basics of scenario-based user centred design, can use and can select the appropriate ones for the case in question
• The student knows the basics of the methods for collecting user data, analysing it and presenting it and use this information in design processes
• The student knows the user interface, interaction and user experience design methods and underlying theories
• The student knows the methods for evaluating the product’s usability

Assessment criteria, good (3)

• The student understands how the different media elements are interpreted and how this affects the design of the content
• The student can adapt and combine different design methods so that s/he can avoid the problem areas of these processes
• The student acknowledges the recent design theories and approaches (e.g. EUD, EUA, UX, Lean & Agile development methods) and can use these in the conceptual design process and implementation process

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student and use, adapt, modify and develop further the methods used in the course. Furthermore the student understands how these methods relate to different theories and how these affect the choice and selection of methods used for particular design cases. The student can lead a team work where the users are involved as active participants and resolve potential conflicts.
