Objective

On completion of this course the student will have basic knowledge of the technical basic solutions and structures of finishing machines and devices as well as varnishing. He/she knows the raw materials, properties and use of bindery glues and varnishes, too.

On completion of this course the student will be able to use a paper cutting machine and make simple technical adjustments and foldings on a folding machine.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

• The student is able to identify the main finishing steps of newspapers, magazines and books as well as some unit operations of finishing.
• The student is able to identify the most important finishing materials as well as some factors contributing to quality, productivity and costs.
• The student is able under direct supervision to use the finishing equipment of the printing lab and to complete the lab assignments.
• The student knows the purpose of finishing in the process of print production and as part of the activities of a printing company, and is able to identify the role of sub-contracting in finishing.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

• The student is able to identify the main finishing steps of newspapers, magazines and books and describe several unit operations of finishing.
• The student is able to identify finishing materials and identify and assess factors contributing to quality, productivity and costs.
• The student is able with some supervision to use the finishing equipment of the printing lab and to complete the lab assignments.
• The student knows the functions of finishing in the process of print production and as part of the activities of a printing company, and is able to evaluate the role of sub-contracting in finishing.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

• The student is able to identify the main finishing steps of newspapers, magazines and books and describe the unit operations of finishing.
• The student is able to identify finishing materials, and to identify, assess and develop factors contributing to quality, productivity and costs.
• The student is able to independently use the finishing equipment of the printing lab and to complete the lab assignments.
• The student is able to evaluate and develop the functions of finishing as a part of the print production process and as a part of the printing company activities, and is able to evaluate the pros and cons of sub-contracting in finishing.
