Objective

On completion of this course the student will know the stages and unit operations of the prepress workflow and the principles of the automatic workflow. He/she will know the important standards within prepress (PDF, JDF, Postscript, file formats). He/she will have a general view on device and software requirements.

On completion of this course the student will be able to produce print ready, imposed digital files out of text, image and graphic elements. He/she will also be able to specify the automatic prepress workflow. He/she will know the unit operations and will be able to use a PDF-workflow programme in graphic production.

The student knows
- basic steps in the prepress workflow
- requirements for print ready material
- basics of imposition
- basics of different workflow models and automation
The student is able to
- assess the print readiness of material and produce print ready PDF-files
- implement simple automated tasks
- produce color managed proof (hard/soft) under supervision

Assessment criteria, good (3)

The student knows
- steps in the prepress workflow and interfaces to other processes
- requirements for print ready material and understands the background information of them
- basics of imposition and its meaning in print production
- different workflow models and basics of automation
- the meaning of color management through the process
The student is able to
- assess the print readiness of material and produce print ready PDF-files, and make possible fixes
- implement automated tasks
- produce color managed proof (hard/soft)
- make simple imposition tasks with software

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student knows
- steps in the prepress workflow and interfaces to other processes
- requirements for print ready material and understands the background information of them, and is able to produce the requirements
- basics of imposition and its meaning in print production
- different workflow models and basics of automation, and is capable of planning them
- the meaning of color management through the process
The student is able to
- assess the print readiness of material and produce print ready PDF-files, and make possible fixes
- implement automated tasks and link them together
- produce color managed proof (hard/soft), plan and implement the workflow for color managed proof
- make imposition tasks with software
