Introduction to PhysicsLaajuus (3 ECTS)

Course unit code: TU00AC01

General information

Credits
3 ECTS

Objective

The course prepares the student to studying physics and technology. The goal is to provide the student with sufficient mathematical skills and with the basics of physical thinking, so that after completion of the course the student is able to begin his/her studies in physics regardless of the extent (or of the lack) of his/her previous education in the field.
On completion of the course the student acquires an understanding on the physical worldview. He/she appreciates that the description of physical phenomena requires the use of physical quantities and mathematical equations and that physical problem solving calls for mathematical skills. He/she knows how to solve simple equations including physical quantities. The student is familiar with the concepts of scalars and vectors, and he/she is even able to solve simple problems including vector quantities.
The student appreciates the role of mechanical motion as the basis of all physical phenomena. He/she acquires a conceptual understanding on rectilinear motion and learns how to solve simple problems related to it.

Content

Physical quantities and units, unit conversions
Symbolic solving of equations, determining the value of expressions consisting of physical quantities
Trigonometric functions and basics of vector algebra
Graphical presentations and analysis
Rectilinear motion

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

Pass (H)

The student can, with minor errors, solve simple problems that deal with unit conversion, solve simple equations, and determine the value of expressions consisting of physical quantities. The student knows how to compose simple graphical presentations and how to interpret them. He/she is competent in vector calculus. He/she is familiar with the basic concepts and quantities related to rectilinear motion, and capable of solving simple problems related to rectilinear motion.
