Objective
On completion of the course the student will be more confident when speaking Finnish in every day life as well as be able to understand and communicate more in Finnish.
After successfully passing the course, the student will be more comfortable expressing himself/herself in the language that is commonly used by a native speaker. This course supports the student with his/her first encounters with the language used in social situations in the Finnish working life.
Content
The course consists of teaching lessons on the intensive week, company visit, Café Lingua practices and a final feedback lesson.
The main focus is on practice. The more one will communicate during the course, the more of spoken language theory will be remembered.
The conversation topics include:
- Introducing oneself
- Studies
- Working life
- Leisure time & Activities
- Emotions & Reactions
The theory topics of spoken language include:
- Pronunciation & intonation
- Vocabulary, including slang
- Sentence structure
- Pronouns
- Verbs, including expressing past, present and future
- Asking questions
- Adding and omitting sounds
- Numbers
- Partitive case (partitiivi)
Qualifications
Finnish for Foreigners 1 and 2. The concepts used in spoken language will be explained with the grammar basis of written Finnish.
Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)
The student
- shows confidence when engaging in a conversation in Finnish
- is able to recognise some basic features of colloquial Finnish
- attends all the lessons
- passes final pair exercise with positive feedback
- gives feedback at the final lesson
