Objective

Embedded Cellular Systems provides an up to date insight into development and implementation of small scale embedded cellular systems based on open source environment. The course covers both hardware and software development as well as various real life applications and case studies.

Content

Course is based on hands-on exercises and practical laboratory exercises combined with lectures on topic at hand.

Course contains a brief introduction to AVR RISC-based microcontroller used in open source development platform. Introduction is followed by an insight to embedded small scale cellular networks and systems and their applications. Emphasis on the course is on practical applications and in the development and implementation of such embedded cellular systems.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

Student understands the basics of analog and digital I/O and can connect and control peripherals using analog and digital I/O lines as well as using serial communications.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

Student understands the basic principles of connecting a device to the GSM network and knows how to control a GSM-network device using AT-commands.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

Student understands and knows how to implement GSM-network devices. Student understands and knows how to control devices over the GSM-network and is capable of implementing a device that can be controlled via the GSM-network.
