Objective

The student will be able to calculate stresses in beams and columns and understands the correlation between stresses and strain in basic cases. The student will be able to solve deflection of beams and design simple beams and columns.

Content

Basic assumptions in mechanics of materials, Hooke's Law, stresses in a section of a member: axial loads, bending, shear, torsion, deformations: axial load, temperature, Euler's buckling cases to columns, basic principles of design of beams and columns, solving the differential equation for deformation of beams, principle stresses, basics of the theory of plasticity
