Bachelor of Engineering

Materials Technology and Surface Engineering is a necessity in all industrial activities and building services covering areas from traditional to high-technology engineering. The aim of materials technology and surface engineering is to improve the performance of structures and devices, to enable new technological innovations and to provide finished products with durability and an aesthetic appearance. This can be utilised in improved efficiency in most activities of the society and in more pleasant living conditions and environments.

The Bachelor of Engineering degree consists of 240 ECTS credits with an average duration of four years. The number of students in the programme is about 100. The programme focuses on developing professional expertise in Materials and Corrosion Technology, Industrial Surface Engineering and Surface Treatment of Buildings while providing also basic knowledge and skills in mathematics, natural sciences and business economics.

In the studies of Materials and Corrosion Technology the students acquire an in-depth understanding of the characteristics of various materials and their behaviour in varying conditions. The graduated engineers are capable for materials research, selection and failure analysis.

The studies of Industrial Surface Engineering cover all the coating and surface treating methods for various purposes in all sectors of industries from mechanical engineering to electronics industry.
The specialization field of Surface Treatments of Buildings focuses on painting and other surface treatments of buildings. Surface treatments of new buildings and facades of restored buildings are covered and implementation of the treating process from planning to completion is emphasised.

Development

Materiaali- ja pintakäsittelytekniikan koulutusohjelman toimintaa ohjaa neuvottelukunta, joka koostuu yritysten sekä Metropolian henkilökunnan ja opiskelijoiden edustajista. Neuvottelukunnan kokouksessa 8.2.2011 hyväksyttiin uusi opetussuunnitelma.
