Product design and manufacturing methodsLaajuus (15 ECTS)

Course unit code: TX00BU67

General information

Credits
15 ECTS

Objective

On completion of the course, the student will be able to design and manufacture a product, choosing the right materials for it. The student will be able to read and draw technical drawings. The student will be able to make workshop drawings, and choose the suitable tolerances and surface roughness according to the use and production methods.
The student will be familiar with the principles of various manufacturing processes. The student will be able choose the most suitable and cost-effective manufacturing process for each product and understand the impact of the choice for the sizing, measuring accuracy and design of the product.
The student will be familiar with the most common materials, as well as with the effects of heat treatment, alloying and coating on these properties.

Content

1. Technical drawing and labeling
2. Tolerances and surface roughness determination, as well as mark on the drawings, schematic drawings, and assemblies.
3. The basics of CAD
4. Production methods: Metal cutting, welding and pasting, plate and sheet metal work, electrical discharge machining, casting, sintering, molding.
5. The choice of material for construction, the effects of alloying, heat treatment and coating on the material properties, and chemical corrosion
