General information

Credits
5 ECTS

Objective

The student is familiar with the biochemically most important groups of compounds, their structures and their properties. He or she knows how biological macromolecules are formed and how significant they are as parts of the cell structure and cell functions. The student understands the activities of genes and enzymes in the cell, the regulation mechanisms and can explain the most important energy and metabolic reactions.
The student understands the role and significance of different nutrients in the human body, and knows from which foodstuffs different nutrients are gained. He or he is familiar with nutrition recommendations and different special diets.
The student knows the most common biochemical research methods.

Content

Structure, properties and activities of different biomolecules (amino acids and proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, nucleic acids)
Energy metabolism and the main reactions in the cell (enzyme activity, regulations of genes, information transfer from DNA to proteins, the immunological system)
Food degradation and adsorption of nutrients, energy balance, diet recommendations, special diets, prebiotics,
Most central biochemical research methods
