Objective

The student gains a good overview of bioinformatics and know typical databases and tools. The student is able to analyze and further visualize analysis results. The student is also able to apply acquired knowledge to wet lab work.

Content

1. Introduction to bioinformatics: basic terminology, acquirement and analysis of biological data using tools of bioinformatics.
2. Concept of evolution at the molecular level.
3. Bioinformatics as a tool in wet lab

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

1. The student masters the basic terminology in bioinformatics and is able to search and store data from databases. The student knows how to make sequence alignments.
2. The student understands the concepts of homology, paralogy and orthology at the level of genes.
3. The student is able to utilize databases for wet lab work for example checking the theoretical functionality of PCR-primers.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

1. The student can choose the right tools for analysis and visualization. The student understands how algorithms work when aligning sequences.
2. The student is able to compare species based on their DNA sequences (phylogenetic). The student is also able identify conserved areas on proteins by comparing multiple sequences.
3. The student is able to utilize bioinformatics when getting familiar with new wet lab methods.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

1. The student can evaluate the validity of analysis conducted with bioinformatics.
2. The student understands how terms like motive and domain function in evolution.
3. The student is able to utilize bioinformatics skills when optimizing and developing wet lab protocols.
