Introduction to Digital DesignLaajuus (3 ECTS)
Course unit code: TA00AB48
General information
- Credits
- 3 ECTS
Objective
Basic knowledge of digital systems.
After completion of this course the student will be able to perform the conversions from desimal to binary and hexadecimal numbers and vice versa. The student will understand the significance of 2's complement numbers, will be able to convert signed binary numbers to 2's complement system and will be able to perform additions and subtractions using the 2's complement numbers. The student will be able to realize logic functions by basic gate circuits and to define the functions a given circuit performs. The student will know the most common combinational circuits and understand their operation and most common applications. After completion of this course the student will be able to simplify logic functions and truth tables to the most simple SOP-format using Karnaugh's chart. The student will be able to enlarge the most common combinational circuits to larger bit quantities. The student will be able to construct simple functional blocks using the most common digital circuits and will be able to perform their fault analysis.
Content
Binary and hexadecimal numbers. 2's complement numbers. Logical functions, finding their most simple POS-type simplifications by Karnaugh's map and the realization of the functions by logic gates and NAND-circuits only. Most common combinational circuits.
Floating point numbers. Hamming-coding. POS-functions and their circuit realization. Realization of logical functions by coders and multiplexers.
