Objective

The student gains facilities for rehearsing with an orchestra or large ensemble (such as big band, choir, wind ensemble, pops orchestra or symphony orchestra), for choosing, editing and preparing exercises and arrangements in accordance with the style and level of the group, for conducting the orchestra in rehearsals, concerts and studio conditions, and prepares for advanced studies in orchestra and band conducting.

- Historical survey of the development of orchestral setups
- Tuning techniques for the orchestra
- Properties and functions of the instruments and instrument sections
- Stage setup and hierarchy of responsibilities
- Criteria for the selection of repertoire
- Making and rehearsing 'head arrangements'
- Planning a rehearsal schedule
- Analytical listening and giving feedback
- Technical, artistic and social evaluation
- Conducting techniques and principles
- Score reading exercises, listening and analysis of works

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student:
• has participated in lessons as agreed
• has carried out the agreed tasks
• is able to work independently
• is familiar with orchestra tuning techniques, understands the functions of different big band sections, and understand the placement of players on stage
• is familiar with music selection and training schedules and the drawing up of related documentation
• is familiar with the principles of leadership techniques
• can read music scores and analyze music by ear
• is able to give feedback to players, taking into account technical, artistic and social aspects
