Objective
The student is able to put into practice the knowledge adopted in Melody and Harmony 1 course. He/ she will be able to write an accompaniment to a melody in an appropriate style. The student learns to write a two- and three-part sectional harmonies.
Content
– Superimposed chords
– Chord substitutions
– Voice leading
– Standard forms in jazz
– Analysis of melody, harmony and the form of jazz standards
– Harmonization and reharmonisation
– Scales (modes of Melodic Minor etc.)
– Slash chords
– Two- and three-part sectional harmony
– Written report of the chosen music theory book
Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)
The student:
• is involved in class as agreed
• has completed the agreed tasks
• is able to work independently
• is able to analyze tonal melody and form harmony
• is able to write tonal voicings with leading seventh and ninth chords
• is able to mark tonal melodies with chord symbols
• is able to reharmonize tonal melodies with chord symbols
• is able to write tonal accompainment voicings to a tonal melody
• is able to write a melody for two and three voice sectional harmony
• is able to write simple tonal melodies
• has made a brief written summary from the given theory book
