Objective

The student familiarizes him/herself with various teaching methods of Afro-American music, and with selecting, editing, and arranging material appropriate for the corresponding band level, as well as producing extra practice material when necessary.

Content

- A historical survey of the genres of jazz music
- Application of cognitive pedagogy for band teaching
- Sense of style and creativity in interpretation, improvisation and accompaniment
- Properties and functions of the instruments in a band
- Determining the level of a band and repertoire
- Selection of repertoire, listening from recordings and preparation
- Making 'head arrangements'
- Planning and implementation of a rehearsal strategy
- Application of theoretical knowledge into practical situations
- Analytical listening and giving feedback
- Technical, artistic and social evaluation
- Comparison of different teaching methods
- Criticism discussions

Qualifications

Completion of Ensemble Pedagogics 1 or Ensemble Leading 1 study units is not required of Theory Teacher or Music Producer majors.

Assessment criteria, approved/failed

The student:
• has participated in lessons as agreed
• has carried out the agreed tasks
• is able to work independently
• understands the roles and responsibilities of a band leader and manager
• knows band instrument characteristics and roles
• is able to select and prepare material in a pedagogically meaningful way for a conservatory-level small ensemble
• is able to prepare a piece of music for the demonstration lesson

Further information

This study unit is recommended to coincide with Band Leading 2 course.
