Objective
The student increases his/her skills and knowledge of the African American rhythmic idiom - especially in polyrhythm and polymeter, stylistically consistent phrasing and articulation, and metric modulations. The student deepens his/her command of additive rhythms and becomes familiar with the most common Eastern rhythmic systems. The student is able to adapt the learned phenomena to his/her own instrument, in an appropriate style.
Content
- reading and writing excercises in duple, triple, quadruple and compound meters
- irregular rhythms ("temporary polyrhythms")
- polyrhythm and polymeter
- changing tempi and time signatures, and metric modulations
- common complex and additive meters
- body percussion excercises
- phrasing, articulation and stressing in various styles, stylistical eras, time signatures and tempi
- contrapuntal rhythms
- rubato, free-pulsative rhythm and time-feel
- oral interpretation of rhythm: both prepared and prima vista
- rhythmic imitation and improvisation

• can write rhythm dictations
• can sing simple rhythms in straight time or with jazz phrasing
• can identify exceptional time signatures by ear or in notation
• is capable of expressing swing in common time signatures
• can create polyrhythmic and polymetric rhythms
• can sing music including metric modulation
• has completed the oral and written exam satisfactorily

• has completed the oral and written exam well
