Objective
The student is introduced to working methods and practices of a recording studio as well as to the job titles, job descriptions and hierarchy of studio personnel. The student introduces him/herself to professional terminology and equipment. The student gains familiarity with the structures of production and the stages of its progress from the recording engineer's point of view.
The student learns to influence production content by making the right choices in the recording process and by co-operating productively with musicians and producers. The student learns to make high-grade recordings of medium-sized ensembles typical to pop/rock music and jazz, both from an artistic and technical point of view.
Content
- Basic structures and phases of sound production
- Job descriptions of a music producer and a sound engineer
- Operational use of studio equipment for pop/rock music or jazz recordings
- Professional-level recording of an ensemble containing string and wind instruments, according to given instructions
Assessment criteria, approved/failed
The student:
• has participated in class
• is familiar with the structures and stages of progression of the music production process and the sound engineer's job description
• is able to use studio equipment for recording popular music
• has completed the agreed assignments, including a professional level recording of a small ensemble and track comping
