History of JazzLaajuus (3 ECTS)

Objective

On completion of the course, the student will be familiar with the historical development that resulted in the emergence of jazz. The student will be able to identify the essential cultural/aesthetic and expressive characteristics and the various stylistic eras of jazz. The student will be familiar with the quintessential creators, performers and works, and will understand the influence of the media on the spreading of jazz.

Content

New Orleans in the turn of the 20th century: society, culture, and the music. The essential stylistic eras, creators, works, and central locations from the early 1900’s to the present. The evolution of the jazz idiom, customs of performance, and repertoires. The media and their influence on the development and spreading of jazz.

Assessment criteria, approved/failed

The assessment is based on the student’s work during the course, his/her skills and knowledge at the completion of the course, and his/her ability to reach the set objectives.
A student:

• has accomplished agreed assignments
• is able to work independently
- has knowledge of basic musical elements in history of jazz
- has knowledge of various styles in jazz by hearing
- has knowledge of most importants reasons of developing in history of jazz
