Objective

The student acquires basic facilities for notating aural musical phenomena and understands the importance of good musical notation skills.

Content

- Basics of music notation
- Transcribing the melody of a tonal standard tune
- Transcribing the basic harmony of a standard tune using chord symbols
- Written analysis of a musical form
- Transcribing an interpreted melody of a tonal standard tune
- Transcribing a technically easy and simple improvised melody line

Assessment criteria, approved/failed

The student:
• has participated in lessons as agreed
• is able to work independently
• has successfully completed five transcription and notation tasks

Further information

The student accomplishes one transcription from each of the five groups mentioned in the course content, five transcriptions in total. In addition to that, the student shows knowledge of the most integral principles and conventions of pop and jazz music notation and that he/she is able to acquire more information on music notation, when needed.
