Objective
The student is introduced to working methods and practices of a recording studio as well as to the job titles, job descriptions and hierarchy of studio personnel. The student introduces him/herself to professional terminology and equipment. The student gains familiarity with the structures of production and the stages of its progress from the recording engineer's point of view.
The student learns to influence production content by making the right choices in the recording process and by co-operating productively with musicians and producers. The student learns to make high-grade recordings of typical line-ups common to pop music and jazz, both from an artistic and technical point of view.
Content
- Basic structures and phases of sound production
- Job descriptions of a music producer and a sound engineer
- Autonomous use of recording software
- Professional-level studio recording of rhythm tracks and small groups according to given instructions
- Basic operational use of studio equipment for recording basic tracks and overdubs
Assessment criteria, approved/failed
The student:
• has participated in class
• is familiar with the professional vocabulary, equipment and different stages of the recording process
• is capable of basic studio equipment management for recording, comping and overdubs
• has completed the agreed assignments, including a professional level recording of a small ensemble and track comping
