Objective

Learning objectives
After completing the study unit, students can
• implement peripheral intravenous (IV) fluid treatment and medication in accordance with the current guidelines and regulations.
• deepen their medication competence further by having competence in peripheral intravenous fluid treatment and medication.
• implement and evaluate central fluid management and medication within nurses’ area of responsibility in accordance with the current guidelines and regulations.
• prevent medication errors and act accordingly in medication error situations.
• plan, administer and evaluate the implementation of fluid treatment and medication.
• make dosage calculations related to peripheral fluid treatment and medication as well as added medication.

Content

Safety of IV medication
Nurse’s responsibilities regarding IV medication
Aseptic techniques in IV medication
Infusions: adding electrolytes, antibiotics and other medicines
Infusion rates: manual dosing, automatic control of infusion rate, use of injection and pain pumps
Complications of IV medication
Acute anaphylactic reaction
Implementation of peripheral cannulation and risk factors
Evaluation and development of medication
