First Aid and Clinical Treatment in Clinical Laboratory WorkLaajuus (3 ECTS)

Objective

Students know how to provide help and administer first aid in emergency situations and in the most common cases of illnesses and accidents. Students obtain information on prevention of accidents as well as on health and its self-motivated promotion. Students obtain basic skills in and knowledge of nursing that are central in terms of the work of Biomedical Laboratory Technologists. Students familiarise themselves with the operations of a medical unit as part of the service chain for patients and understand the significance of co-operation between the medical unit and the laboratory.

Content

The most common accidents requiring first aid; injury mechanisms and typical injuries; the resuscitation procedure; seizures, bleeding and shock; wounds and contusions; head and facial injuries; limb fractures and joint injuries; moving and lifting of the injured and their transportation postures; poisonings; burns, scalds and frostbite; eye injuries; risk of blood-borne infection, protection against hazards and first aid
Interaction when working with clients; transportation of patients; administration of drugs by injection, fluid treatment, bladder catheterisation; ensuring painlessness and treatment of pain; operations of a medical unit and its co-operation with a laboratory.
