Objective

Students form a holistic view of the perioperative care process. They are able to evaluate factors related to client-oriented care and create a confidential care relationship based on evidence. Students understand nurses’ scope of responsibility and the importance of multiprofessional cooperation in the decision-making process of nursing. They can observe, treat and evaluate the patient’s wellbeing during the procedure and in the recovery room as well as implement aseptic techniques correctly. Students master the documentation and reporting of the intraoperative phase.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

Students can describe the care process of a perioperative patient and know nurses’ scope of responsibility in nursing care.
Students are familiar with the principal methods of care and observation during the procedure in the recovery room.
Students are familiar with the principles aseptic principles.
Students are familiar with the documentation of patient care and principles of reporting as part of safe care.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

Students understand nurses’ area of expertise and scope of responsibility in the multiprofessional workgroup.
Students understand the significance of aseptic principles as well as the care and observation methods in the safe and patient-oriented care of perioperative patients.
Students master the documentation and reporting of patient care throughout the perioperative nursing process.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

Students comprehend the perioperative care phase as part of the surgical patient’s holistic care.
Students can evaluate the patient’s individual need for care during the procedure and in the recovery room considering patient safety.
Students are able to use the principal methods of care and observation as well as act in accordance with aseptic principles in various care situations.
Students perceive the significance of documenting and reporting as part of the continuity of patient care.
