Objective

Students know how to plan and administer medication in different ways in accordance with laws and regulations on pharmaceuticals. They master the dosage calculations required in the administration of medicines. Students are able to provide education on medication to patients/clients and commit them to it. Students identify the risks involved in the medication process and understand the prevention of medicine deviations as part of the patient safety.

Organisation, guidance and supervision of medication, nurses’ rights and responsibilities regarding medication
Basic concepts of medication
Acquisition and handling of medicines
Prescribing medicines
Nurses’ limited right to prescribe medicines
Medication plan
Different types of medicines, ways to administer medicines and dosage
Aseptic protocols in medication
Planning and implementation of medication, observation related to patient’s medication, effects of medicines and their side effects
Use of Pharmaca Fennica and pharmaceutical database
Patient education on medication
Documenting and reporting medication
Prevention of medication errors as part of patient safety
Dosage calculations

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

Students plan and implement safe medication in different ways in accordance with laws and regulations on pharmaceuticals.
Students master the dosage calculations of the course immaculately (pass/fail).
Students are familiar with the basics of patient education on medication and provide education to clients/patients and commit them to it.
Students identify the risks involved in the medication process and understand the prevention of medicine deviations.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

Students plan and implement safe medication in different ways in accordance with laws and regulations on pharmaceuticals justifying their actions.
Students provide patient education to clients/patients as well as commit them to their pharmaceutical care justifying their actions.
Students analyse risks involved in the medication process and prevent medicine deviations by their own actions.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

Students plan and implement safe medication patient-orientedly in different ways in accordance with laws and regulations justifying their actions.
Students identify clients'/patients' need for education and provide education on medication, commit clients/patients to it on an individual basis justifying their actions.
Students analyse and anticipate risks involved in the medication process and act responsibly to prevent medicine deviations.
