- 1 ECTS
Objective
Students are familiar with the central anaesthetic substances used in anaesthesia and intensive care, administration of anaesthesia and its methods as well as students’ responsibility when caring for a surgical patient and/or a patient in intensive care by means of medicine.
Content
Anaesthesia substances.
Administration of anaesthesia: equipment, preparing patient for anaesthesia and premedication, methods of IV cannulation, respiratory passage, monitoring patient during anaesthesia.
Different methods of anaesthesia.
Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)
The student has an understanding of the different forms of anaesthesia and the assessment of an incoming surgical patient. He/she is aware of the risks involved in various forms of anaesthesia. The student can differentiate between different patient groups as anaesthesia patients. He/she recognizes medicines used in connection with anaesthesia. The student is familiar with the indications and injurious effects of the most common pain medications. The student recognizes the benefits and disadvantages of epidural pain relief. He/she knows the physiological grounds of fluid therapy and blood transfusions. The student is familiar with MET (medical emergency team) operations and MET criteria. He/she has an understanding of intensive care.
Assessment criteria, good (3)
The student has a clear understanding of the different forms of anaesthesia and the assessment of an incoming surgical patient. He/she is aware of the risks involved in various forms of anaesthesia. The student can differentiate between different patient groups as anaesthesia patients. He/she recognizes medicines used in connection with anaesthesia, and their injurious effects. The student is familiar with the indications and injurious effects of the most common pain medications. The student recognizes the benefits and disadvantages of epidural pain relief. The student is aware of other invasive alternatives of pain treatment. He/she knows the physiological grounds of fluid therapy and blood transfusions, and recognizes their problems. The student is familiar with MET (medical emergency team) operations and MET criteria, and recognizes situations that require MET activation. He/she has an understanding of intensive care.
Assessment criteria, excellent (5)
The student has a clear understanding of the different forms of anaesthesia and the assessment of an incoming surgical patient. He/she is aware of the risks involved in various forms of anaesthesia. The student can differentiate between different patient groups as anaesthesia patients. He/she recognizes medicines used in connection with anaesthesia, their injurious effects, and the most common dosages. The student is familiar with the indications and injurious effects of the most common pain medications, and is able to identify appropriate pain medication dosages for different routes of administration. The student is able to monitor a patient receiving epidural pain relief, and identify problems related to epidural pain relief. The student is aware of other invasive alternatives of pain treatment. The student is able to set up a patient’s fluid therapy as instructed by the doctor and monitor the patient’s fluid balance. The student is aware of important factors that affect blood transfusions and knows the theoretical basis of blood transfusion implementation. The student is familiar with MET (medical emergency team) operations and MET criteria, recognizes situations that require MET activation, and knows how to proceed in these situations. He/she knows and recognizes the most common reasons for needing intensive care.
