Objective

Students know how to plan, implement and evaluate central intravenous (IV) fluid treatment, medication and pain management in various nursing environments. They can identify development needs related to fluid treatment, medication and pain management. Students apply evidence-based knowledge to the planning, implementation and evaluation of treating the patient’s acute/chronic pain. They are able to act in a client-oriented way with patients/clients and their significant others. Students know how to act in a safe way when implementing central intravenous fluid treatment, medication and pain management. They are aware of the significance of psychosocial support to the care of patients in pain in different age groups and know how to use this knowledge in the care of their patient. Students can provide education on medication and self-care to patients in pain in a health-promoting way. They work as members of a multiprofessional team in cooperation with patients and their significant others. Students are competent in dosage calculations related to central intravenous fluid treatment, medication and pain management. They are aware of the basics of safe protocols in planning and implementing cytostatic treatment.

Safety and aseptic protocols of central IV fluid management and medication
Responsibilities of nurses concerning central IV fluid treatment and medication
Assisting in central IV line cannulation, observing and treating the needle prick area
Fluid treatment and medication through ventral intravenous PAC catheter
Safe use of equipment used in the implementation of fluid treatment and medication

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

Satisfactory:
Students are aware of the significance of evidence-based knowledge to the management of acute/chronic pain as well as know how to plan, implement and evaluate the care of patients in pain.
Students understand the significance of multiprofessional cooperation in nursing of patients in pain.
Students identify factors affecting pain medication, self-care and managing health problems in patient education.
Students are familiar with the most common pain medication, their effects, means of administration, mechanism of action and adverse effects as well as the principles of implementing medication.
Students work patient- and goal-orientedly and interactively with the patient in pain and his/her significant others.
Students identify situations threatening the mental health of patients in pain and are aware of their impact on sensing pain and experiencing it.
Students manage dosage calculations related to peripheral intravenous fluid management and medication as well as dosage calculations of pain management impeccably (pass/fail).

Assessment criteria, good (3)

Good:
Students plan and implement safe central intravenous fluid management and medication by diverse assistive equipment in accordance with present regulations justifying and evaluating their actions.
Students are familiar with safe actions regarding planning and implementation of cytostatic treatment, and they are able to justify their actions.
Students are aware of the significance of evidence-based knowledge in the management of acute/chronic pain and can plan, implement and evaluate the pain patients’ care as well as justify it.
Students understand the significance of multiprofessional cooperation and know how to apply it to nursing of pain.
Students identify factors affecting pain medication, self-care and managing health problems in patient education as well as can utilise them in patient education.
Students are familiar with the most common pain medication, their effects, means of administration, mechanism of action and adverse effects and can implement medication justifying their actions.
Students work patient- and goal-orientedly and interactively with the patient in pain and his/her significant others as well as can promote the patient’s resources and functional capacity.
Students identify situations threatening the mental health of patients in pain and are aware of their impact on sensing pain and experiencing it as well as are able to apply this knowledge to help the patients.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

Excellent:
Students plan and implement safe and patient-oriented central intravenous fluid management and medication by diverse assistive equipment in accordance with present regulations justifying and evaluating their actions.
Students work patient-orientedly and safely when planning cytostatic treatment as well as justify their actions.
Students apply evidence-based knowledge to the treatment of acute/chronic pain as well as know how to plan, implement and evaluate the pain patient’s care. They are able to justify these actions.
Students understand the significance of multiprofessional cooperation and know how to apply and justify their actions in treating pain.
Students identify factors affecting pain medication, self-care and managing health problems as well as can anticipate and utilise them in patient education.
Students are aware of the most common pain medication, their effects, means of administration, mechanism of action and adverse effects as well as can implement medication justifying their actions and anticipating risks involved in medication.
Students work in interaction with the pain patient and his/her significant other promoting the patient’s own decision-making and finding means to solve problematic situations.
Students identify situations threatening the mental health of patients in pain and are aware of the impact on sensing pain and experiencing it as well as apply this knowledge.
