Objective

The aim of this course is to introduce the most common mathematical and numerical methods and tools that are used for solving engineering problems.

Content

- Graphical presentations of measured data
- Basic mathematical models
- Functions and simple algorithms
- Recursion and difference equations
- Modeling dynamic systems
- Interpretation of presented data

Qualifications

Basic engineering mathematics (TI00AA04) and Introduction to Calculus (TI00AA05) or similar courses completed:
- Can solve basic algebraic problems,
- Knows the most commong engineering functions, and
- Is able to differentiate and integrate

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

On the completion of the course the student:
- Knows the standard graphical presentations and mathematical models
- Is able to present data graphically and make simple interpretations based on the presentation
- Can create basic algorithms and mathematical models using common numerical tools and use them to analyse given data

Assessment criteria, good (3)

In addition to satisfactory criteria:
- Knows what are dynamic systems and how to describe them mathematically
- Knows what means recursion and how to use it to solve difference equations
- Is able to use recursion and difference equations to model engineering problems
- Can interpret the results and make adjustments to the numerical model in order to improve the model fit

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

In addition to good criteria:
- Understands the role of the functions and algorithms in numerical modelling
- Is able to analyse the given problem and create a numerical model for that
- Is able to adapt the numerical algortihm for a given problem
- Can evaluate and analyse critically the data, the model and presented results

Assessment criteria, approved/failed

On the completion of the course the student:

- Can create basic algorithms and mathematical models using common numerical tools and use them to analyse given data
