Objective

The student knows the structure and operation of a third generation cellular system core network and radio access network. The student understands the operation principle and characteristics of Wide Band Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA) air interface.
The student is able to compare and explain basic advantages and weaknesses of the 3G technology.

Content

· Evolution of mobile cellular systems from 2G to 3G.
· Architecture of 3G (UMTS) network and its operation principles
· Radio Resource Management and Quality of Service in Third-Generation Wireless Networks
· WCDMA radio interface, codes and channels
· Alternatives for multiple radio access, FDMA, TDMA, CDMA
· Spectrum Efficiency of various multiple access methods
· Characteristics of a mobile cellular radio environment

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

- The student understands the basics of a WCDMA technology including the structure of a WCDMA radio network
- Participation in lessons and laboratory hours
- Delivered laboratory exercises and passed exam

Assessment criteria, good (3)

- In addition to requirements of grade 1:
- The student understands the function of the main building blocks in a WCDMA network
- Knows the principles of WCDMA network planning

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

- In addition to requirements of grade 1 and grade 3:
- The student has an excellent understanding of WCDMA network operation principles
- Excellent laboratory measurement and calculation results

Assessment criteria, approved/failed

- The student understands the basics of a WCDMA technology including the structure of a WCDMA radio network
- Participation to lessons and laboratory hours
- Delivered laboratory exercises and passed exam
