Objective

After completing the course the student knows the phases of the planning process and the principles of the cell capacity dimensioning. The student has the skills to construct the radio link power budget (RLB) and to apply different propagation models. The student knows CIR and K factor as the frequency planning parameters.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

Capacity planning:
-understands the cellular network principle and knows the definitions for cellular network capacity.
Coverage planning:
-understands the RLB construction and principle.
Frequency planning:
-knows the elements of the frequency planning process and understands the importance of CIR and K factor.
Parameter planning:
-has knowledge of the different methods to extend the cell coverage.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

Capacity planning:
-is able to calculate the amount of traffic offered into the network.
Coverage planning:
-is able to construct the RLB and to use public propagation models.
Frequency planning:
-is able to determine the CIR and the K factor number values.
Parameter planning:
-has knowledge of the methods to reduce interference in the network.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

Capacity planning:
-is able to determine the blocking probability and to dimension the cell.
Coverage planning:
-understands the dependence between the cell coverage and QoS.
Frequency planning:
-understands the meaning of sectorization and is able to form the table of radio channel distribution.
Parameter planning:
-has knowledge of the methods to increase cellular network capacity.
