Objective
On completion of the course the student is expected to be able to
- describe and implement the major laws of fluid and gas mechanics and heat transfer that are the grounds of construction engineering, and determine the quantities in them
– present the major methods and instruments of measurement in construction physics
– take basic measurements related to construction physics
– write reports based on the measurements.
Content
Liquids and gases.
Density, surface pressure, hydrostatic pressure, gas pressure.
Pressure and depth. Archimedes’ law.
Fluid mechanics: basic concepts and Bernoulli’s law.
Thermal expansion and ideal gas law.
Heat storage and changes of state.
Working in a laboratory, assessing the reliability of measurements, and project reports.
Viscosity.
Laminar and turbulent flow.
Generalised Bernoulli’s law.
Advanced applications related to the topics of the course.
