Geometry in ConstructionLaajuus (3 ECTS)

Course unit code: TC00AA07

General information

Credits
3 ECTS

Objective

On completion of the course the student will be familiar with the basic concepts in geometry and descriptive geometry, will recognize scalar and vector quantities, will be familiar with the basics of vector calculations and will be able to apply these skills in studies in other subjects.

The student will be able to apply axonometry, draw three-dimensional structures with the help of a two-dimensional drawing, to solve the measurements needed to calculate area and volume by using projections, to calculate the surface area of a body, to draw the ridge and folds of a roof with altitude lines, to draw altitude lines to a given map and to use drawings to illustrate structures.

Content

Trigonometry. Plane geometry. Space geometry. Vectors. Descriptive geometry: Line types and using them. Polyhedra and plane sections of polyhedra. Memory triangles. Axonometry, structural section in an isometric projection, the real length of a line by turning it downward and parallel to vertical plane, expanding the surface area of a body, altitude lines and graphs, the so called golden section, ellipsis, helical curve.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student is able to solve a right triangle, is able to calculate simple planar areas and the volumes of ordinary objects. The student is able to employ vectors for presenting quantities with directions.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

In addition to the requirements above:
The student is able to solve an oblique triangle, is able to calculate planar areas and the volumes of objects. The student is able to solve problems including vector quantities.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

In addition to the requirements above:
The student is able to synthesize the knowledge and skills learned during the course, to use coordinate conversions and to measure planar areas and objects defined in various ways.
