Objective

After completing the course, the student knows the fundamentals and the most important applications of optics in Health Informatics. The student knows the properties of light, colors and their presentation, picture formats, operation of optical fiber, lasers and optical receivers. He or she knows how to calculate and measure the strength of light and optical power, do calculations to dimension optical systems, and is able to be responsible for laser safety in diagnostics and therapy. The student knows the most important applications of optics and lasers in Health Informatics.

Content

Properties and units of light, color and their presentation, formats of digital and x-ray images, using video. Types and properties of optical fibers, operation of lasers and optical receivers, dimensioning of transmitter and receiver circuits, laser safety. Endoscopes and therapy lasers.

The student knows the properties of light, definition of colors and formats of digital and x-ray images in health informatics. The student understands the principle of lasers and laser safety and can design optical systems when introduced in new applications. The student knows the operating principles of the most common diagnostic and treatment devices based on optics.

The student understands the principle of lasers and laser safety, and can design optical systems when introduced in new applications. The student knows the operating principles of the most common diagnostic and treatment devices based on optics. The student can design systems that are based on optics.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student knows the properties of light, the definition of colors and formats of digital and x-ray images in health informatics, and can design and build systems based on video formats. The student understands the principle of lasers and laser safety, and can configure devices. The student can solve optics- and electronics -based problems mathematically. The student can design mathematically new applications of optics.
The student knows widely the possibilities of optical technologies used in diagnostics and treatment applications.
