Objective

After completion of this course the student will have a basic understanding of bioanalytics and common clinical laboratory methods and equipments. The student will have a deeper understanding of the testing methods and devices of clinical physiology and clinical neurophysiology. The student will comprehend the basic techniques and equipments of clinical chemistry, clinical heamatology, clinical microbiology and clinical pathology. The student will understand how to cooperate with health care professionals and clinical laboratory professionals.

1. Fundamentals of clinical laboratories and bioanalytics
2. Technology of clinical physiology
3. Technology of clinical neurophysiology
4. Technology of clinical chemistry
5. Technology of clinical haematology
6. Technology of clinical microbiology
7. Technology of clinical pathology

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

1. The student is able to understand the basic methods and techniques of clinical laboratories.
2. The student is able to understand the structure, configuration and function of clinical laboratory equipments.
3. The student is able to understand the most common breakdowns and failures of clinical laboratory equipments.
4. The student is able to carry out the basic maintenance and repair procedures of clinical laboratory equipments.
5. The student is able to cooperate with health care and clinical laboratory professionals on a basic level.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

1. The student is able to understand advanced methods and techniques of clinical laboratories.
2. The student is able to understand the integration and interfaces of laboratory devices and local area networks.
3. The student is able to understand interfaces between human body, physiological signals and laboratory technology.
4. The student is able to make a maintenance and service plan for a laboratory device.
5. The student is able to operate independently with clinical laboratory devices.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

1. The student understands at least one laboratory method and device in detail.
2. The student understands special and complex laboratory methods and technology.
3. The student is able to understand clinical laboratory devices in the point of view of health care professionals.
4. The student is able to make a maintenance and service plan for a complex clinical laboratory system.
5. The student is able to understand clinical laboratories as multifunctional health care units.
