Objective

Students understand the importance of waste legislation and they know the main important regulations. Students understand the waste treatment cycle from formation of waste to the final disposal of waste material. After the course students have the basic knowledge of environmental management systems including the principles of management requirements, auditing and continual improvement.
The course will also provide students with an understanding and knowledge to the main content of life cycle assessment including definition of a product system, data collection, inventory analysis and impact assessment.

After the course students can operate in waste treatment sector by following the main waste legislation regulations. Students understand the content of environmental management documents.
After the course students can perform a simply life cycle assessments independently and they understand the importance of the source of errors to the results of LCA.

Content

Environmental legislation focused on waste and recycling area. Waste treatment technologies such as waste dumping, biological treatment and waste incineration. The principles of Environmental Management systems (ISO 14000 and EMAS), definition of environmental impacts and continual improvement cycle. Definition of coals and the product system of life cycle assessment (LCA). Performance of inventory analysis and impact assessment. The critical analysis of LCA and conclusion making.

Special questions of problem waste treatment. The importance of monitoring and checking in development of environmental management systems. An operative character of life cycle assessment and computer software’s of LCA. The impacts of different characterization models. Different applications of LCA. Standards related on life cycle assessment.
