Objective

The student learns the basic concepts related to probability and the basic principles of statistical thinking. He or she learns how to model random phenomena and visualize the measured data. The student knows the basic principles of statistical tests, statistical process control and how to apply simple regression analysis in engineering problems. The student learns to interpret statistical data using basic statistics and graphical representations.

Content

The student is able to apply the basic rules of probability. The student knows the most important discrete and continuous distributions and how to apply them in problems of media engineering. The student understands the meaning of a confidence interval and how to apply it in statistical reasoning. The student knows the most common statistical tests of comparisons and how to apply them in problems of media engineering. The student is able to apply the principle of least squares in regression analysis e.g. with Excel and Matlab.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student learns the basic concepts related to probability and the basic principles of statistical thinking. He or she earns 40 % of the maximum points (which is the sum of tests, well done homeworks and laboratory works).

Assessment criteria, good (3)

He or she is familiar with the wide selection of graphical possibilities. He or she can choose the best type of graphical representation for the statistical data (with Excel or Matlab). The student is able to apply central rules of probability and statistical analysis into simple and middle level problems.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student knows random variables and their most common distributions. He or she is able to apply estimation of measurement uncertainty, confidence limits and statistical reasoning using confidence limits. He or she can work with statistical tests and their applications in media engineering and regression analysis and its applications, too.
